A woman and her two children sustained serious injuries yesterday after a fire broke out in her apartment, owned by a famous tycoon in the outskirts of the capital’s Prek Pnov district.

The fire started at 5.30am in Borey Piphop Thmey Chhoukvar I in Kork Rokar commune. Captain Sok Sarath, deputy chief of the commune police, identified the three victims as Kim Youri, 28, and her two sons, Sorivanphou, five, and Soriphayuth, three.

Capt Sarath said that the fire was caused by an explosion of electrical wires. Neighbours heard shouts for help and saw the woman and her two sons locked inside a burning room. Five people broke down the door and windows and entered the house to rescue them, attempted to extinguish the fire and alerted the commune police.

“This is the first time a fire has broken out in an apartment inside this tycoon’s luxury apartment complex in Phnom Penh,” he told Khmer Times.
