The fire broke out early Friday afternoon and soon enveloped the entire building, spreading a giant plume of toxic smoke that was visible for miles over the city.
Around the Russian Hospital area, residents and businesses suffered a loss of electricity.
Firefighters have bravely battled the blaze all afternoon but have been thwarted by intense heat and fumes caused by foam mattresses in the building igniting.
As of this evening, an investigation into the causes of the inferno is now ongoing. The building is still ablaze and the fire appears to have spread to an adjacent building, amidst growing fears from local residents that the building will collapse.
